Barking Mad By Melissa Rowley
He ran at me and jumped right up, his tail wagging like crazy,
And there I stood, tired from work and feeling rather lazy,
I looked down and saw that look, the one that begs and pleads ,
Go on mum, take me out, I'll run and fetch my lead.
So off he went, scampering fast,
As though this moment was his last,
Then in a flash he returned again,
And the look on his face was still the same.
So with a sigh, I put down my things,
And took his lead of thick twined strings,
Then placed it around his hairy neck,
And prepared myself for our little trek.
I opened the door and pushed it wide,
He yanked me hard, I could have cried,
And off we went for our little run,
Me thinking 'Oh God, this is going to be fun!'
He pulled and tugged and stopped and started,
Occasionally, he even f*rted ,
Looking at me as if to say,
It wasn't me, ...........no way.
He pushed his nose along the ground,
Ears listening for that certain sound,
And there it was, I heard it too,
from heavy footsteps, a solid shoe.
I stood up straight and looked ahead,
There she was and my smile spread,
The special woman of my dreams,
And that of my dogs, or so it seems.
So we walked together, she and I,
Hands together, thigh to thigh,
And let him go and have his play,
Free for now, free for the day.
Joyfully, we watched him chase....
The other dogs in the place,
Listening to the noise they made,
Running over each grass blade.
It was lovely here, holding her hand,
Walking through this open parkland,
A place I wanted to stay for good,
I had to tell her, I knew I should.
I pulled her close and uttered those words,
Spurred by the sound of lulling song birds,
And kissed her cheek and then her lips,
Pushing close, hips to hips.
If I told you her answer, would you believe,
That on that lovely summers eve,
She called my dog and held him in check,
Then placed his lead back around his neck.
Then in long strides she took me away,
My dog behind us, like a straggled stray,
Leading me back to my quaint little house,
I stayed as quiet as a little church mouse.
Scared to say anything to ruin our time,
Together, forever in this very rhyme,
As she opened the door and let me in,
My thoughts settled on only one thing.
And that is my memory, for me to know,
If you can't figure it out then you really are slow,
Safe to say, the dog had his run
And me and my girl well we had some fun.
