The Autumn River

By Vinnie Sutherland

the autumn river thickens
with winter
and I am swallowed
my love for you is sand
that quickly drowns me

I round a bend
and move through the breath
of an antlered buck
hanging like frost in the air

you'll never know it
how it feels to hang in the air
like frost
how it feels to drown
in thick water.
