Cheating By Jan Thomas
My brain keeps poor company
My heart has shut its door.
To keep away the memories
Of what had been before.
Mystery I present for you
A key to you I offer.
Unlock this heart and lay it bare,
There lies a message, if you care.
You'd never know I loved her
Nor know how she loved me.
A braver me ran in the sun,
She hid from all who see.
And though our love was not designed,
Somehow, it came to be.
She wasn't free to walk with me.
I asked, but she replied,
"I'm ill and you can't care for me.
At least, he can provide.
Plese stay with me?" she begged,
Until I cried.
Six years went by, the times had changed,
I asked again, but she replied,
"I answered you that years ago.
If you want more, then you should go."
She didn't beg, I didn't cry.
My tears had long been dried.
My brain keeps poor company.
I have no friends to comfort me.
My soul must yet still braver be.
Perhaps this poem can set me free.
If I reach out....
