Her Phonecall-After 6 Years Away

By Jan Thomas

It was the strangest thing.
I answered the phone and heard her voice,
But I'd never heard it ring.

She spoke with anxious pace and tone.
It made me think she ran some race.
How fast could she complete her task?
Could time lost ever be erased?

Her voice unlocked the door to years,
Remembering, she affected me.
Through all the times she'd hugged me near,
I'd held her closer to my heart.

I listened to her voice elated.
Was truth missing from her sound?
Is it that her senses tremble,
>From this power I have found?

No more the girl she used to play,
I challenged her at every turn.
Not fool enough to live her way,
While life grows short, the more we stay.

She rambled on, we made no plans.
I realized, we're worlds apart.
She'll find her porch on which to rock,
But me, I'll never be the "tock,"
On her misbegotten clock.

My heart is honor bound to be.
'Til honest Love embraces me.
