Ode to My Ex and Her Mother

By Jan Thomas

You came in a dream ...before you arrived,
Your image preceded by your eyes,
Voicing melodies that called out my heart.
Touching my shoulders in a reassuring way,
Quelling those fears that rise amid dreams,
Promising, love will find the way.

Love arrived and awakened us to living,
Much like a circus tours the land.
Center ring hosts our endeavor,
Under watchful, crowded stands,
Set on taming our reality,
Whips a wild maternal cord,
Until victorious, she rules again,
As your heart from mine is shorn.

You left in a dream ...before you departed,
Your image cloaked as a pup unweaned,
Growling anguished chokes at the end of a chain,
Crouching onto me by some primal instinct driven,
Shattering promises, love dies forgiven.

So why do I grieve on this eve of your birthday?
What's left to say, that's worth to say?
I've no hope left to save you,
Desire's dead in my heart,
But I can't stop this feeling of caring for you,
As a good neighbor should, 'round the corner in my heart.
With love, Happy Birthday, from my heart to yours.
