What She Doesn't Know Won't Hurt Her

By Karen Godson

When we were walking down the treed path
With each other's hands clutched fiercely
Against the stares and sneers of passersby;
When we walked for miles
Just to get to the zoo,
When I ran down those monster stairs
To make sure the bottom of the slide wasn't wet;
When you stood on the peninsula and kissed each other,
As I looked on in utter joy at your shared bliss;
Or as we shared secrets the night before...
Tell, me. Just when did you two know
You were going to bring the Universe down
Around me?
