Battle Scene By Jesse
I stand gazing at a rainbow,
a ribbon of colors draped vividly across the sky.
Rain softly kisses my face.
The sky grows dark
except for a few rays of sun
escaping the clouds.
A gentle breeze runs
her fingers through my hair,
and I imagine my lover's fingers
as the breeze.
A small sigh escapes me. In this brief moment,
the two thousand miles between us disappear.
My mind drifts to when I watched
her pull away, tears filling my eyes.
She rounded the corner,
taking my heart with her.
Her truck disappeared,
leaving me longing for one more hug,
one final kiss, another chance
to tell her I love her.
She discovered her way
through the labyrinth of my heart,
melting the walls of ice protecting it.
I was no longer the soldier
standing at attention
but the woman who wished
to spend an eternity in her arms.
Like a child in need of her stuffed bear,
she reaches for me in my thoughts,
pulls me close
as we spoon ourselves to each other.
I gently place my arm over hers;
our fingers intertwine.
I am safe here,
especially when she whispers
those three words that ease me into sleep.
The rain no longer caresses my face,
and the breeze pulls back her fingers from me.
Images of my lover fade
with the rainbow,
leaving me longing,
aching, for her even now.
